On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
