Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Key plot points for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Revealed

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of adventurers who will separate from the central cast to undertake their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might appear out of place, but the developments of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the team understands precisely where to head next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose demise initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a hostile place.
  • The warrior and The healer, having resisted his family’s wishes to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in the powerful family could assist the party reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, Teor vowed a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are hunted by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • Thimble and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the clan.

This means them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the rest of the players to assemble the Explorers and Planners groups.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, released on the upcoming Thursday.
