Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
